Westlake Chaparrals eliminated in area round of high school baseball playoffs

DRIPPING SPRINGS – With three one-run games, Westlake’s Class 6A area-round playoff series against Smithson Valley couldn’t have been any closer.

Unfortunately for the Chaparrals, the matchup of two teams ranked in the state’s Top 10 went the way of the Rangers, as Westlake fell 5-4 in the deciding Game 3 Saturday at Dripping Springs High School.

“This was a good game of defense and timely hits,” Westlake coach JT Blair said. “Our pitchers did a good job of keeping us in the game, and we turned a couple of double plays. Overall, our guys battled, hung in there, and they got the big hits, and we didn’t. “

With Game 2 ending less than 13 hours before the noon first pitch as Smithson Valley claimed a 7-6 win in a marathon 12-inning contest Friday night, the Rangers continued their momentum. They got on the board early with four runs in the first two innings.

The Chaps' Blake Peterson rounds third base and heads for home with a run.

Kasen Wells doubled and eventually scored on a groundout in the bottom of the first, and after Westlake tied the game in the top of the second on Cooper Berry’s RBI double, the Rangers pushed across three runs in the bottom of the inning on MJ Espinoza’s two. -run single and Timothy Arguello’s RBI hit.

The Chaps (27-8) took advantage of singles by Aidan Bennett and Ty Shapiro and a Smithson Valley error to produce a run in the third, then got within 4-3 on Berry’s run-scoring hit in the fourth.
