The Championship lesson Manuel Benson must learn if Burnley new boy is to thrive

Vincent Kompany hopes Burnley flyer Manuel Benson will learn a lesson from the defeat at Watford and the lenient nature of referee Thomas Bramall.

The winger was the subject of three fouls in the first four minutes at Vicarage Road by full back Hassane Kamara. None were punished with a card and, having looked to trouble the Watford backline early on, Benson seemed to be disrupted by the aggressive man marking. The 25-year-old struggled to impact the game and was replaced in the second half as the Clarets sought a way back into the contest.

Benson, who arrived just over a week ago, had made an instant impression with a super showing off the bench against Luton Town but couldn’t hit those heights on Friday night. He will hope to retain his spot for the midweek visit of Hull City but will come under pressure from new boy Nathan Tella and Vitinho among others.

And the Clarets chief believes the former Antwerp star must adapt his game if confronted with physical challenges early in games.

“I’ve been a defender myself,” said Kompany. “I can’t fault the lad who’s doing it, I know what it is. He’s trying to send a message but usually when you send a message like this you’re looking out of the corner of your eye thinking ‘Am I going to get booked or not?’

“If you get booked you say, ‘Okay, right’, you’ve got to settle it down. But as long as you keep getting away with it you just keep going. But it’s something I think we’re going to have to deal with.

“I don’t care whether the ref should have given it or not, I don’t care whether the defender should have done it or not, I just look at my team and we should just deal with it. If he comes to kick you, run in behind, if you run in behind and he matches you for pace, get the ball to feet and I think you create space for yourself.”
