St James Infant and Nursery School pupils enjoy sports week

Children have immersed themselves in a range of sports and even climbed a fell, as part of a sports week to inspire healthy living.

St James’ C of E Infant and Nursery School hosted its annual sports week designed to develop children’s knowledge and understanding of health and nutrition as well as providing them with a range of sports to experience.

The children also enjoyed food technology and designing their own healthy snacks.

Pupils got to experience yoga, tri-golf, rugby with Whitehaven Sharks, first aid training with SHN training, fencing, HIIT session with Xtreme Fitness, dance, wheelchair basketball and karate with Cumbria Karate Academy.

Head teacher and organizer, Michael Craig, said: “We have been running our sports week now for the last five years and the children absolutely love it. I am so grateful to everyone who comes in and helps make this possible. Children get to try new sports and learn new skills which are fantastic. ”

Children have also been running laps on the school yard in a sponsored run event inspired by Gary McKee’s momentous marathon challenge. He even visited the school to tell pupils about what he is doing, what he wants to achieve and what inspires him to keep on running.

Mr Craig said: “The children were in awe of him and it really helped inspire them to run even more.”

Also every child in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 walked up Dent.

Mr Craig said: “This provided many children with that amazing first experience of reaching the top of a fell for the very first time. The children couldn’t believe the view and they were waving at their family members who worked at Sellafield from the top.

“With the Lakes on our doorstep, we want to inspire as many children as possible to take up fell walking and give them that first WOW moment.”
