Small business owner thrives despite hardships

Starting a new business is never easy. For wife and husband team Rosa and Carlos Reyes, dealing with prejudice makes it even harder.

When the Reyes started their Round Rock-based lawn care business, getting clients was difficult. Rosa said many people made assumptions based on how they looked.

“Because I am Mexican (American), there have been a lot of people who shut doors on me and call me names,” she said. “That kind of makes me sad.”

As the country celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, Reyes said she feels honored to be a small business owner and Hispanic. She realizes that some people may look down on her because of the way she looks and her ethnicity. And she uses that to push herself.
