Powell River Board of Education trustee candidate: Jaclyn Miller

“I’d like to focus over the next four years on increasing employee engagement, ensuring we have appropriate services in place to support our student’s social-emotional needs…” ~ Jaclyn Miller

Six candidates have entered the race for the five Powell River Board of Education seats to be filled on general election day (October 15), including Rob Hill, Dale Lawson, Maureen Mason, Jaclyn Miller, Scott Randolph and Kirsten Van’t Schip.

The Peak asked each candidate the following question:

Why should voters choose you to serve as a Powell River Board of Education trustee?

Here is the response from Jaclyn Miller:

First, I’d like to thank everyone who has put their name forward for public office and commend them all for their courageous commitment to our community.

Now a bit about me! I’m a mother of two Brooks Secondary School students: Olivia, 16, and Connal, 13. I was actively involved in both Westview (president) and Brooks PACs, as well as District PAC (president), until my election to the Board of Education in April 2021, where I currently serve as vice-chair.

I was a frontline child protection worker for 20 years and now a child protection supervisor since 2020. I’ve been actively involved in many local committees focused on family violence, poverty reduction, youth engagement, early years and drug use intervention/education.

I was elected to the board in 2021 and have learned a great deal in the last year. I have a much clearer understanding of the board’s purpose and function, and its limitations. I’m ready to hit the ground running!

I’d like to focus over the next four years on increasing employee engagement, ensuring we have appropriate services in place to support our student’s social-emotional needs, and ensuring our district has what is needed to support students in graduating with options, purpose and dignity.
