Insurance agent in Miri claims loss of over RM50,000 to Macam scam

MIRI (May 15) A 32-year-old insurance agent here lodged a police report claiming to have lost RM50,700 to a Macau scam syndicate.

District police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the victim disclosed that she had received a call from an impersonating man as a police officer.

Alexson said the man who introduced himself as ‘Sergeant Yeap’ from the Perak contingent police headquarters told the victim that she was involved in a fraud case which took place in Kuala Lumpur.

“The victim was asked to provide all her bank account numbers with the amount of money available in each of the accounts,” he added.

Alexson said the suspect then handed over the case to ‘Inspector Yong’ from Bukit Aman to get more information about it.

In addition, he said the suspect had told the victim to appeal to the officer for investigation first before the charge was made.

“Inspector Yong then instructed the victim to transfer a sum of money into a given account.

“A total of five transactions have been made by them victim involving RM50,700 to several bank accounts given by the suspect in stages. The transactions were made between April 3 and 30, ”Alexson said.

He said the victim only realized that she had been deceived after making the last transaction and decided to lodge a police report on the incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.
