In collaboration with TOPHOTELDESIGN, we shine a light on five outstanding hotel designs featuring stone.
This noble material with use throughout history is incorporated into contemporary design in multiple ways and styles.
What do we think about when we mention stone? Where does it take us? Or should I say what time does it take us back to?
From Stonehenge to the Great Pyramids of Giza, stone has participated in humanity’s development before the beginning of written history. In fact, a whole Age is named after it. Whether it marks a burial mound or the summit of a mountain, it’s linked to the presence of humans in remote natural areas.
We’ve been shaping and stacking stones for multiple reasons, and we’ve never stopped, with the need to transport stones in order to build structures meaning those constructions are usually close to their source. Their aesthetics are inevitably related to our ancestors’ environments and their interaction with them.
Today we select five projects that brought this material into contemporary design, from an exquisite Valser Quarzite spa / bath that immerses visitors into the elements of the mountain to rougher structures that blend into the landscape and refined and polished stone interiors.
