Cornwall vodka school is a first in the UK and is based at award winning Colwith Farm Distillery

Whisper it, but gin is so 2020 – the new hip drink is vodka and the growing trend for flavored varieties. In a first for the UK, a plow-to-bottle vodka school has opened right here in Cornwall meaning you can make your own bespoke vodka following some expert tuition.

There’s no better place to learn about vodka than at the premises of one of the best brands in the world. Lanlivery-based Colwith Farm Distillery’s Aval Dor vodka won the prestigious Double Gold Medal for two consecutive years at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2020 and 2021 – a first for a UK distillery.

Cornwall’s only single estate distillery has launched the UK’s first plow-to-bottle vodka school and is now ready to welcome visitors. Colwith is a fascinating place to visit – you can see every step of how the drink is distilled from Cornish Lady Amarilla potatoes grown on the fifth-generation family farm.

The engaging two-hour vodka school is led by Jo Harley, who offers expert tuition and teachings on the history and origins of vodka – before guests are given a behind-the-scenes tour of the distillery, which can produce up to 1,000 bottles a week and are then sold everywhere from local farm shops to Selfridges in London.

From the huge cooker, which can take up to six tons of potatoes, to the computerized still and even the water used in production from the farm’s pond, it’s a fascinating process to witness how the vodka is refined to the creamy, warm end product – no harsh, throat-burning vodka here; this is class stuff. Following the tour, guests get a tutored tasting of their range of spirits (five vodkas and four gins), in addition to access to the vodka school where you will be able to use a blend of botanicals completely bespoke to individual tastes, some picked from the on-site kitchen garden, to create your own vodka in a mini still.

Who knows, maybe you’ll invent something as sublime as the citrus vodka which Colwith came up with in collaboration with renowned chef Emily Scott or the Aval Dor Cornish rose and hibiscus vodka which is like drinking liquid Turkish Delight. You also get a welcome drink, seasonal cocktail and £ 5 discount in the gift shop. And those Burts crisps you get to eat alongside the vodka tasting are made from the farm’s potatoes too.

Colwith Farm Distillery’s two-hour vodka school is available at £ 79 per person, or £ 99 for two and the three-and-a-half-hour vodka masterclasses are available for £ 99 per person or £ 149 for two – on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays throughout 2022. The distillery team also offers a gin school and masterclass.
